Agentic Commerce Protocol. Shopify merchants can opt-in to the Agentic Commerce Protocol (launched May 2024). This enables product discovery and transactions in ChatGPT, but adoption remains limited in 2026 (under 5% of merchants). An interesting future channel, not yet a mainstream sales driver.

Shopify is for many organizations the obvious choice for e-commerce. The platform is mature, reliable and has the largest ecosystem in the market. For straightforward B2C commerce: Shopify is hard to beat. Where we're cautious: Shopify is not composable in the MACH sense. You're bound to Shopify's data model, pricing logic and checkout. For organizations that need true flexibility (custom pricing engines, multi-brand, custom checkout): look at Commercetools.

Compliance and data residency – Shopify Plus is ISO 27001, PCI DSS Level 1, SOC 2 Type II certified. Data is hosted on AWS in the US; no native EU data center. For GDPR-strict environments: a DPA is available, but US residency carries theoretical CLOUD Act risks.

Is Shopify suitable for enterprise?

Yes, Shopify Plus is enterprise. Used by Gymshark, Kylie Cosmetics, Heineken. For pure B2C enterprise: absolutely. For complex B2B enterprise: evaluate carefully.
